Chica

Chicas are the smallest vine cherry tomatoes on the market. This small tomato is the Guanita variety, bred by De Ruiter Seeds. After a small scale trial in 2005 and a total area of 18,000 m2 in 2006, we decided to increase production of Chicas to 37,000 m2 in 2007. When considering the positive reactions and healthy demand in 2006, and the still limited total area of this product in the Netherlands, this distinctive vine tomato offers good opportunities for both traders and retailers.

Long, healthy trusses
The great interest in Chicas is mainly due to the good characteristics of the product. First and foremost, it is a very fine tomato, with a diameter ranging between 18 and 27 millimetres. The fruits weigh around 10 to 14 grams each. Each truss bears an average of 15 to 20 fruits, and is practically completely straight. The green parts of the truss also stay fresh for a long time, thus retaining the fruit well.

Sweet and healthy fruit
Chicas have a Brix value of 8 or more, which makes them very sweet, and therefore very popular in salads, as a garnishing or as a snack. Chica also has a strikingly high Lycopene content of more than 10 mg per 100 grams of flesh. Scientific research has shown Lycopene to be a natural ingredient which inhibits many common ailments while also having anti-ageing properties. The Chicas ripen very evenly, giving the trusses a nicely uniform appearance on the shelf.
